Rapist gets life in Rajshahi

A tribunal here Wednesday sentenced a person to life imprisonment for raping a teenaged girl in the city last year. Judge of the Special Tribunal for Prevention of Women and Child Repression Abdus Saleque found Mithu alias Milon of Bazekajla area under Motihar police station in the city guilty of the charges and pronounced the verdict.The court also fined him Taka 5,000, in default, to suffer six months more behind the bars without labor. Another accused Azad has been acquitted, as the charges brought against him could not be proved.According to the prosecution, the convict called out his neighbor teenaged girl and forcibly took her to his bedroom and raped her there.Father of the victim lodged a case with Motihar police station on March 9, 2007 against the two persons. On completion of investigation, police pressed charges accusing them.After examining the recorded depositions of 12 prosecution witnesses and other relevant evidences the tribunal pronounced the verdict.Special Public Prosecutor Mahbubul Islam moved the case on behalf of the state while advocates Nurul Islam and Shahidul Islam Khokon defended the accused.
